Let’s hope that Girinka is better administered this time

Editor, I was pleased to read in The New Times of yesterday that 3000 vulnerable families in the country will get cows by the end of this year, in the ‘One Cow per Household’ project commonly known as Girinka. The aims of this programme are highly commendable and I’m a firm believer that this programme can lift entire communities out of poverty and malnutrition.

Editor,

I was pleased to read in The New Times of yesterday that 3000 vulnerable families in the country will get cows by the end of this year, in the ‘One Cow per Household’ project commonly known as Girinka. The aims of this programme are highly commendable and I’m a firm believer that this programme can lift entire communities out of poverty and malnutrition.

However, as we saw earlier this year, this programme can be abused by those who are supposed to implement it.  I hope that mechanisms to check that abuse have been put in place to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.
