THE National University of Rwanda (NUR), is organising a conference to design strategies to cope with the recent government’s decision to cut down funding for universities and other higher learning institutions.
The government announced that it would cut the budget by up to 25 percent. Talking to The New Times, Prof. Silas Lwakabamba, the university Rector, disclosed that under the sponsorship of the US government, NUR invited Prof. Richard Berman, a New York based expert to be among the guest speakers of the conference that is scheduled to be attended by NUR administration, staff and students.
"Despite the budget cut, the University must remain efficient and effective. NUR will remain to be a model in quality education and will strive to offer better services to people,” Lwakabamba said.
He added that the university wants to design strategies to improve staff productivity, expansion, growth, and how to tap opportunities within the economy.
Dr. Evode Mukama, the university’s Director of Center for Instructional Technology noted there is need to learn from foreign experience to implement innovative strategies as one of the ways of bridging gaps in the budget deficit.
