EDITOR,

I was pleased to read in The New Times of wednesday August 25, that the government will spend an estimated Rwf 28bn on fertilizers and seeds to help farmers in the country.

This was revealed by Violet Nyirasangwa, the Programme Manager in charge of supporting producers’ professionalization in the Ministry of Agriculture.

The only way that Rwanda will become an exporter of food, instead of merely self-sufficient in food production, is if it embraces wholeheartedly the ‘Green Revolution”.

We must use the best seeds available and make fertilizers a tool that each and every farmer uses. It shouldn’t be impossible for Rwanda to become a bread basket of sorts in this region. All we need is hard work and investment in agriculture.
