Three killed, seven injured in lorry accident

Kirehe/Muhanga - Three people were killed and seven seriously injured in a lorry accident on Friday, at approximately 9.30 p.m., in Kaduha village in Mushikiri of Kirehe district.

Authorities said the driver of the truck appeared to have lost control.

According to Benson Muhikira, the Vice Mayor Economic Affairs, Kirehe district, the lorry had 40 people on board.
 "The lorry was carrying people from a wedding ceremony, most of whom were ADPR Church choir members,” he said. "It rolled over the steep hills,” he said.

Seven other people were seriously injured and hospitalized at Kirehe and CHUK hospitals.

Kirehe hospital doctors said that at least 29 people, who sustained minor injuries, will be discharged soon.
 "Ambulances from the neighboring districts and Kigali were dispatched to the scene of accident,” said Dr. Christian Rusangwa treating the injured at Kirehe hospital.
Venasia Niyoyatana the driver of the lorry sustained minor injuries, and is among those Kirehe hospital. His turn boy, Rukara escaped unhurt.
The driver said that the he lost control after swerved to avoid knocking down a cyclist.
 "A bicycle came towards me, by trying to avoid it, I drove aside. Unfortunately, the vehicle swung on one side and swayed off the road,” he said.
Meanwhile, this weekend also left three residents of Kamonyi District injured after a passenger service van and a Fuso truck collided head on.
According to police, the accident occurred at Kamiranzovu junction in Runda sector.
The injured were rushed to Kigali and are currently undergoing treatment at Kigali University Hospital.
