Man admits to stabbing student to death

RUBAVU - Police in Rubavu District have arrested a 24-year man alleged to have killed a student on Wednesday.

Emmanuel Twagirayesu, a resident of Kanzenze, Rubavu district, is said to have stabbed to death David Masengesho, 19. Masengesho was killed as he attempted to apprehend the accused who was trying to steal property.

Masengesho, was a form 3 student at Rega Secondary School in Rubavu.

Speaking from Police custody, Twagirayesu admitted to killing the deceased.

"I engaged him physically in a bid to rescue myself, but he held onto me and kept calling neighbours forcing me to use the knife I had in my hands.”

The accused further asked for forgiveness. "I hereby call upon the family of Masengesho to forgive me if it is possible, and I have already confessed to police for having murdered the deceased,” he added.

Police said that they tracked the suspect using a jacket which was found at the scene of crime.

"We called on residents to identify the owner of the jacket.The residents’ leads led to his arrest,” Police said.

Vital Ntagonzera, the high court prosecutor told The NewTimes that the suspect would be arraigned before court today.

According to Article 321of Penal code, the suspect upon being found guilty is liable for a prison sentence of five -ten years in jail.
