KIGALI - Proprietors of all buildings in Kigali city have up to the end of this month to have installed metal detectors as a security measure.

The new safety move was approved yesterday in a meeting that brought together Kigali City authorities and police with proprietors of commercial buildings, hospitality facilities including hotels, guest houses and lodges, heads of banks and insurance companies, private security companies and transport companies within the city.

The meeting chaired by city Mayor, Aisa Kirabo Kacyira and attended by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Emmanuel Butera, also set up to the end of this week for all proprietors to have installed projectors above 250 watts to provide sufficient lighting on their premises.

The move comes following last week’s grenade attack at a busy commuter terminal in downtown, commonly known as kwa Rubangura.

Police Spokesperson, Eric Kayiranga had last week said that lack of enough security lights was one of the security threats in Kigali.

Butera appealed to private security companies to carry out their respective duties, calling upon hoteliers to register all people who sleep in their facilities.

"There are so many enemies…but they should not shake us because we have the capacity to stop them,” Butera said, calling on all employers to keep the records of their workers.

He also appealed to hotel and lodges proprietors to lay strategies on how to search their clients’ luggage.
Proprietors, however, requested that there be tax reduction on security equipment to help acquire them at a low cost.
