Low maternal deaths rates should be our target

Reducing maternal death and infant mortality rates is a goal of the Rwandan government.

Editor,

I was pleased to read  in The NewTimes that there has been a new nine-room maternity ward unveiled at the Busogo Health Centre. This centre is also expected to serve as a centre for family planning awareness. It is my belief that a woman dying while giving birth is a tragedy of the highest order. Women should not be afraid to give birth to the next generation of Rwandans because they fear that they will die.

It is the nation’s responsibility to make sure that childbirth is a safe experience for our sisters and mothers. Opening maternity wards is the first step. More must be done.
