The national men’s rugby team, the Silverbacks start training today for the fourth edition of the Prinsloo sevens that will take place at Nakuru athletic club on August 28 and 29.

Silverbacks coach Gerald Nsenga told Times Sport that he has summoned a squad of 20 players to start non-residential training at Rugunga playground and the team will be cut down to 12.

"I have called up 20 players but I only need 12 so those who will impress will make the final squad. We need to better last year’s performance (Silverbacks lost in the plate final to Kenyatta University),” Nsenga said.

Silverbacks performed poorly in their last 7s tournament in the Safaricom 7s after losing all the four matches that they played to Ponsonby (31-0), Hamilton raiders (45-5) and Uganda (26-0) and Argentina (38-0).

But Nsenga thinks that the team gained a lot of experience playing top notch sides like Australian club-Hamilton raiders and Argentina.

"We were only drafted in to play that tournament at the last minute which was full of top quality players, with the majority professionals, so we did not have any chance but the players learned a do,” added Nsenga, who is also the league champions, Buffaloes RFC coach.
