Fleeing inmate shot dead

RWAMAGANA - Prison authorities at Nsinda Prison have revealed that an inmate was shot dead by prison guards as he attempted to escape last Wednesday.

Innocent Rwagasana, 26, tried to escape while being treated at Rwamagana Hospital   according to Jean Paul Murindwa, the Director of Nsinda Prison.

He said the deceased was on remand facing charges of being in possession of counterfeit currency.

"It is true that he died after being shot by one of our guards while trying to escape,” he said.

Murindwa added that the deceased had been taken to hospital for treatment as he was suffering from Tuberculosis.

Claude Ndagijimana, a medic at Rwamagana Hospital said that  Rwagasana’s body was being kept in the mortuary pending  postmortem procedures.

Meanwhile, police have said that they have launched investigations to establish  circumstances leading to the death of the inmate.
