Editor,

HAVING read an irresponsible article in the German weekly, Der Spiegel, under the title, "Rwanda’s Election Blues. Opposition Politicians and Journalists Persecuted
in Run-Up to Election”, I felt the need to respond to it.

The article insinuated many things in a mixture of ignorance and superficiality-especially about the so-called ‘opposition’.The article should have been investigated better: a large portion of the so called "opposition” doesn’t represent any democratic opposition according to our understanding but rather want to play the ethnic card.

Let us pick one example, Victoire Ingabire. She is described in the article "as the most promising rival candidate”. It is completely justified that she is under detention because, as the group of experts of the UN Security Council worked out, she kept close contact with the terrorist organization FDLR.

Her right hand, Joseph Ntawangundi, pleaded guilty for his role in the Genocide and close intimate friends of Ingabire have admitted that they have hatched plans with her to form militias, destabilize the country and overthrow the democratically elected government.

It is too easy to criticize but remember how hate propaganda against the Tutsi was spread in the guise of ‘free speech’. Why don’t your newspapers and human right organizations report about the threats to the genocide survivors and the still enormous psychological and physical scars of the victims instead of fighting for dangerous ideologues and revisionists?

The Rwandan people, fortunately, aren’t impressed by this unqualified criticism from abroad but are more interested in the continuation of the successful policy of reconstruction, unity, reconciliation and stable democracy.
