NYAMAGABE – The Liberal Party’s (PL) presidential hopeful, Prosper Higiro, has lashed out at critics outside the country who allege that his party is only ‘accompanying’ the ruling RPF-Inkontanyi in the race for the top seat in the land.

Addressing a rally yesterday at Gasarenda trading centre in Tare Sector, Nyamagabe District, said that PL had for a long time prepared itself for the exercise, and was ready to take up the challenge to lead the country.

"Those making such wild allegations have been baffled by our country’s democratic process, and have now resorted to making such ridiculous claims; PL has a long history in this country and we refuse to be reduced to accompaniments,” he said,

He reminded that the party was established way back in 1993, and was thus not a newcomer in Rwanda’s politics. Higiro assured supporters that his party had taken enough time to understand the problems facing Rwandans and is now ready to deliver.

"Our plans for the next seven years are designed to promote the welfare of Rwandans based on democracy; giving the people a voice. All our plans are founded on the interests of the general population,” he told the cheering supporters.

He said that his political party advocates for a democracy that upholds the values of the Rwandan people; a democracy that does not take the country back in the dark past.

"I will strive to promote this, and leaders who do not comply will be shown the red card,” Higiro, who is also  the vice president of the Senate, added.

Francois Byabarumwanzi, the party’s campaign manager, said Higiro, fondly referred to by his fans as Gikundiro, had distinguished himself as a leader at the local and international scene.

"The best way to prove that he is able to lead this country is for you to vote for him come August 9,” Byabarumwanzi told the cheering supporters. 

The PL candidate promised security for the people and their property, and to foster regional and international cooperation, to expand markets and modernise agriculture.
Higiro promised to promote value addition to the produce from the district, which is known for coffee, tea, wheat and maize.

He said that tea produced at Kitabi and Mata plantations has attracted a huge international demand, adding that he will help further that reputation for the benefit of the local farmers and the nation at large.

The presidential candidate promised to overhaul the education sector, by putting more emphasis on practical skills to empower students with entrepreneurial skills.

Higiro pledged to promote proper feeding habits, hygiene and family planning, saying that he would encourage Rwandans to produce  a maximum of three children.
