RWANDA’S under-20 soccer team has been drawn against Uganda in group B of the Cecafa Development Cup scheduled for August 14-28 in Asmara, Eritrea.
Rwanda, which will be represented by the national U-17 side, also have Zanzibar and guest team Yemen in the group.
Uganda’s U-17 team which was banned from African Youth Championships qualifiers for fielded overage players, are expected to maintain the same team which is managed by Coach Video Anyau.
Rwanda’s team will open her quest against archrivals Uganda on August 16; play Zanzibar two days later before winding up their group campaign against Yemen on August 20.
Group A which is regarded as the group of death is composed of hosts Eritrea, Tanzania, Sudan, Kenya and Somalia. The tournament’s opening game will be between hosts Eritrea and Tanzania on August 14.
Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye said yesterday in a press statement, "Everything is almost finalised and we expect the travel agent to do their utmost best to get the tickets for all delegations on time.”
"Delegations connecting through Kenya are expected in Nairobi between August 11-12 to connect to Asmara on a special flight on the afternoon of August 12. Whatever plans you may have ensure that these dates are respected and honoured to avoid missing that flight,” Musonye urged federations.
Musonye also confirmed that Burundi pulled out of the event unexpectedly. "As a result, Cecafa and Eritrean FA agreed to invite Yemen to fill that void,” said Musonye, adding that Eritrea is doing their best to stage a good competition and urged federations to prepare well and present good football at the event.
The tournament will cost a tune of $1 million (Over Frw570m) and prize money worthy $18,000 has been staked for the winners. The winner will pocket $10,000 while first and second runners will bag $5,000 and $3,000.
