Rwandan police officers serving under the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), were yesterday awarded medals in appreciation for their outstanding work.

The police officers are the fifth contingent that has served in Liberia in the peace keeping mission.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, the UNMIL Deputy Commissioner of Police, John Nielson, said that the Rwandan contingent was being awarded for their role they in fulfilling the force’s mandate of restoring peace in Liberia.

Nielson further said that the Rwandan officers have been helping to build the capacity of the local Liberian police force.

"The Rwandan contingent has also been instrumental in mentoring and advising individual Liberian officers,” said Nielson.

Rwanda National Police participates in peacekeeping operations in many parts of the world including; Sudan, Ivory Coast, Chad, and Haiti.

UNMIL was established by Security Council resolution 1509 (2003) and Rwanda is among many other countries participating in the mission by providing police officers for the mission.
