RWAMAGANA - As the August 9 poll draws closer, the Governor of the Eastern Province, Dr. Ephraim Kabaija, requested stakeholders to ensure all polling stations in the province are in order.

"Let the rooms be clean, secure and indeed suitable for the exercise…polling stations are essential component for election exercise. You must also cater for areas that are not accessible easily in a special way,” he said.

He was addressing a provincial security meeting in Rwamagana district on Thursday.

Unlike previous meetings, Thursday’s meeting focused on the presidential campaigns and the impending elections.
Frank Kayiranga, the coordinator of NEC in the province, said electoral officials in conjunction with local leaders have so far done tremendous work, as far as preparing the polling stations is concerned.

"We have adequately prepared even the remotest part of our province…we have two islands in Bugesera; Mazane and Masharati islands, whose polling stations are ready. We have boats to facilitate movement to and from such areas.So we are on the right track,” he said.

Meanwhile, the provincial leader, appealed to grassroots leaders to speed up the process of issuing temporary identification documents to registered voters without National identity cards, to enable them vote as directed by the NEC.

There are 499 polling stations in total in the province.
