MUSANZE - Shock engulfed residents of Bikala Cell, in Nkotsi Sector, Musanze District, after a young man killed his mother in law.
Elisa Murindahabi, 28, is said to have killed Melanie Mukarukore, 60, on Sunday night, accusing her of interfering in his marital affairs.
Murindahabi was arrested from his home by a night patrol team of members of the community police committee and handed over to Muhoza Police station.
He was allegedly found washing blood stained clothes, and a machete he reportedly used to carry out the gruesome murder.
The deceased’s body was taken to Ruhengeri Hospital for post mortem pending burial arrangements.
Speaking to The New Times shortly after his arrest, Murindahabi confessed to having committed the murder, accusing the deceased of failing to reconcile him with his wife following their recent separation.
"I planned to kill her, because she connived with her daughter to take away my children to Kibungo without my notice, she did not do anything to reconcile us when we separated two weeks ago,’’ Murindahabi said.
"I arrived at her home at 9 pm, carrying a torch, I got the panga from the kitchen, I pushed the door quietly into the house and I proceeded to her bedroom,” Murindahabi who appeared composed narrated.
"When she woke up, I did not utter a word, I immediately cut off her head, and fled.’’
Area authorities paraded Murindahabi before the public to explain why he carried out the act, and some residents revealed that he had been overheard a few days ago threatening to kill her.
The sector executive secretary, Alex Munyamahoro, said that the murder was the first one to be recorded in area in a long time..
District Mayor, Winifrida Mpembyemungu, condemned the killing and urged residents to cooperate with community policing committees to prevent crimes, and report domestic-related conflicts to the authorities.
She warned that experience had proved that any person who threatens to commit a felony end up carrying it out, and urged the residents to ensure peace and security during the ongoing campaigns.
