NEC releases final voters’ list

KIGALI - The National Electoral Commission (NEC) yesterday released the final voters list of 5,178,492 Rwandans eligible to cast their votes during the August 9 Presidential elections.

While presenting the register to the media at the commission’s headquarters yesterday, the chairman of the electoral commission, Chrysologue Karangwa, said that the number represented 94.8 percent of the total adult suffrage in Rwanda which stands at 5,465,092.

According to Karangwa, Kigali City, registered a total number of 611,432 voters, among which, 52.8 percent are male.

The Southern Province has 1,265,365 registered voters, representative of 92.9 percent of the adult suffrage. In this province, 56.7 percent of the total voters are females.

In the Western Province, the total adult suffrage is 1, 276, 755 of which the registered citizens make up 95.5 percent. The Northern Province has the highest percentage of registered voters which stands at 96.7 percent.

The Eastern Province registered 1,181,011 registered voters which represents 94.8 percent of the total citizens of voting age.

Voters in the  Diaspora are 21,741 adults of which 21, 17 are the registered voters. This brings the percentage of voters in the Diaspora to 99.9 percent.

At the press briefing, the NEC chairman also passed a vote of thanks to the presidential candidates and their parties on how they are conducting themselves in the ongoing campaigns, and urged them to continue observing the electoral law.

Karangwa also announced that the number of election observers had increased to 1,191, both local and international, saying that all had already been accredited.
