RWANDA’s top seeds Jean Claude Gasigwa and Dieudonne Habiyambere made easy strides into the second round of the national tennis championship which threw off on Wednesday at Cercle Sportif, Rugunga.

Gasigwa trounced Peter Niyomugabo 6-1 6-0 while Habiyambere beat Daniel Nsabimana 6-2 6-2 to set up a second round date with Olivier Kanyendekwe who got a bye in the first round.

In other ties, Eric Uwamahoro thrashed Peter Rwandekwe 6-2 6-2, Olivier Mugwaneza silenced Emmanuel Tuyisenge 6-1 6-1 while Melee Bizimana’s work was cut out for him when Eric Rukundo retired hurt in the first set with the score (5-0) in favour of Bizimana.

Olivier Nkunda, Mathieu Uwizeyimana, Daniel Nkurunziza, Claude Uwizeyimana, Ernest Kazungu, Justin Ntaheranwa, John Munyaneza and Mohammed Mubarak are also through to the second round.

For junior players, the championship is a selection ground for the regional 12 and under circuit which will be hosted in Bujumbura from August 8-16 and the 14 and under circuit scheduled for August 24-28 in Kigali.

According to the technical director of the national tennis federation (RTF) Thierry Ntwali, the championship is the first of two tournaments this year.
