The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has asked the local leaders to provide National ID replacement documents to voters who are on the voters register but lack the IDs.
This was revealed yesterday by the Executive Secretary of NEC, Charles Munyaneza.

According to Munyaneza, many first time voters (those who have just turned eighteen) have no IDs and yet it is one of the requirements at the polling station on August 9.

"This has been a very big challenge for us during registration since some voters have not been able to get the IDs. So we are now working with the Ministry of local government to make sure that the voters get documents which will allow them to vote,” said Munyaneza.

"We don’t want anybody to miss elections because of lack of the IDs, and yet they are on the voters’ register. So we are calling upon all the local leaders to give citizens these documents before Election Day”.

Munyaneza also said that the move will include those who have lost their IDs and cannot obtain new ones before August 9.

The provisional voters’ register that was published last month shows a total of 5,293,888 voters.
