NORTHERN PROVINCE

MUSANZE — A team of veterinary staff of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP) is holding two low-land baby Gorillas rescued from poachers in DR Congo.

According to Dr. J Felix Kinani, of MGVP, the baby Gorillas were recovered on December 31 2007, in a very bad health condition requiring immediate treatment. DRC security personnel intercepted the poachers reportedly on their way from Beni to Goma.

They are from Kahuzi Biega national park in DR Congo.
Dr. Kinani said the animals of four and five years would be transferred to Goma MGVP- offices for more treatment before they can be rejoined with their gorilla families.

He said one of their staff in DR Congo, Dr. Eddy Kambale was attending to the rescued animals and seeking the best means to have them transferred to Goma.

MGVP is an international project which carries out research and conserves the health of the mountain gorillas together with other partners. It operates in Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo.

The security of mountain and low-land gorillas has not been guaranteed in recent times due to volatile security situation in the DR Congo.
