Water project donates motorcycles to local leaders

RUBAVU — The Water and Sanitation project (WASH), initiated my UNICEF, last Friday donated 12 motorcycles to Sector Executive secretaries in Rubavu district, to facilitate the coordination of health and sanitation campaigns.

The Western Province Governor, Celestin Kabahizi, expressed gratitude to the project for its role of promoting hygiene in homes and schools.

"Ever since we signed a memorandum of understanding with UNICEF to launch the project in northern and western provinces; there is improved hygiene and sanitation in the districts. More residents can also access clean water,” Kabahizi, told The New Times.

He revealed that the Netherlands funded project has also donated bicycles to health and sanitation cooperatives in sectors.

Saphia Mategeko, a social worker of the project, said the project has also helped to build toilets in schools and sectors.

"We have built standard toilets in all schools implementing the 9-year basic education programme. We have community teams working in cells and our community has understood the idea of hygiene,” she said.

The project works in four districts of Burera, Musanze   of Northern Province and Nyabihu and Rubavu of Western province.
