HUYE - Doctors at the University Teaching Hospital in Butare are treating a one week-old baby who was mauled by a dog after being abandoned by its mother in Cyanika Sector, Nyamagabe district last week.

According to the doctor attending to the child, the baby sustained serious injuries.

"The right hand had been bitten off by the dog and one leg was heavily wounded,” Dr Emile Musoni said. "But we expect the baby to heal from the wounds.”

Verediane Niyibigira, the mother, wailed uncontrollably when asked to explain why she had abandoned her own child.

The Hospital’s administration said that once the baby recovers, the mother will be forwarded to police to face charges of child neglect.
