KIGALI - The management of the multi-million dollar complex, Kigali Convention Complex (KCC), which is under construction at Kimihurura, Gasabo District, has announced that the project will be completed by December 2011.

Martin Mueller, the project manager, revealed this yesterday while presenting a progress report to  Kigali City and Gasabo District authorities who had visited the site.

The government officials, headed by Alphonse Nizeyimana, Kigali City Vice Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Development, were in the district to assess different developmental projects.

The 300m dollar project, owned by Ultimate Concept Ltd, will comprise of an ICT Park; a convention centre which will include a 15-storey five-star hotel with 292 rooms, four presidential suites, a  royal suite and a conference centre with capacity to accommodate 2,500 people;  offices; and a shopping mall.

The project is implemented by Beijing Construction Engineering Group (BCEG), a top Chinese construction company which constructed Tanzania’s 60,000-seater national stadium.

The entourage which also included Willy Ndizeye, Gasabo Mayor also visited the Social Security Fund of Rwanda (SSFR) construction site in Gacuriro, where the Fund plans to construct up to 2,785 housing units. Fred Rwihunda, the Director of Real Estate Department in SSFR, told the officials that the five-year project, which will start in September, will cost a tune of Rwf 290 billion. He said the project will include apartments, a recreational centre and hospitality facilities.

"Most of the houses will be for the middle class,” Rwihunda said, adding that each unit would cost between Rwf 40m and Rwf 50m, paid within 15 years

The delegation also visited the UNDP site in Kinyinya where the offices of the UN-Family will be constructed.
Nizeyimana said that all the visited developers have no cases that may affect their deadline.

The tour in Gasabo came after a similar exercise in Nyarugenge District.

Nizeyimana said that major ongoing developmental projects in the city amount to Rwf 125 billion.
