GATSIBO - The Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA), in collaboration with UNDP’s Decentralisation Environment Management Project (DEMP), will this month award 60 residents of Gatsibo district prizes worth Rwf9m for their role in environmental protection.

Speaking to The New Times on Thursday, Jonas Mwiseneza, the district official in charge of environmental protection, said that those to be rewarded were selected from three sectors. 

"We selected sixty residents from the sectors of Kiramuluzi, Murambi and Gasange after evaluating their role in conservation, especially on the shores of Lake Muhazi,” he said.  

The first three residents will be given exotic cows while others will be awarded cross breeds, goats and assorted materials like solar energy panels.   

DEMP works with REMA in conservation activities especially on lake shores. Apart from maintaining the shores of Lake Muhazi, other residents were selected for their efforts in preventing soil erosion.
