MUHANGA - The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has tasked motorcycle taxi operators in Muhanga District to mobilise other residents to participate in the forthcoming presidential elections, slated for August 9.

The call was made, Wednesday,  by Drocella Mukazayire, the NEC district official, during a one-day workshop on the role of citizens in elections.

The training attracted over 460 members of the association of Muhanga cyclists under their cooperative, Cootravemomu.

The function was aimed at educating motorists on the significance of participating in elections.

"The cooperative is largely made up of the youth, and such people have a significant role in mobilising other residents to participate in elections,” Mukazayire said.

She also urged them to volunteer in preparing polling stations, mobilise residents to vote on time, and verify their details on the voters’ list, so as to have a successful process.

District security officials also addressed the motorcyclists, urging them to be responsible citizens, maintain peace and security during the campaign period and on the Election Day.

Aimable Mucyo Dusenge, the president of Cootravemomu, expressed their willingness to lead by example, adding that they will ensure discipline among members.

"We are all committed to participating in these elections…we will be there on time and show a good example to others,” Mucyo said.
