Authorities of Rutunga Sector, Gasabo District, on Saturday paid tribute to Genocide victims from the sector who were killed and thrown in Lake Muhazi.

Mourners marched around the surrounding area before descending to the shores of the lake to lay wreaths in the water.

Diogene Bideri, an official from the National Commission for the Fight against the Genocide (CNLG), underscored the importance of paying tribute to the victims.

"Remembering these people is very important because retrieving their bodies is impossible; they were washed away by the water,” he said.

Bideri added that CNLG is planning to put a symbol of remembrance on all shores of rivers and lakes countrywide where the bodies of Tutsis were dumped.

The Executive Secretary of Rutunga Sector, Dismas Nzabamwita, said that most residents in the sector don’t want to tell the truth about how the victims were killed, and urged them to speak up.
