RWANDA’S league champion APR sealed a historic treble in what has been a perfect season after defeating Rayon Sport 1-0 in the final of the MTN Peace Cup yesterday at Amahoro stadium.

A stoppage-time thunderbolt strike from skipper Patrick Mafisango did not only extend Rayon Sport’s trophy-less spell to five years but ensured a third title for the military, who have won the Cecafa/Kagame Cup title and Primus National League title already this season.

Both sides had played an attacking 89 minutes of barren draw but the Congolese-neutralized Rwandan, Mafisango won it for his team with a bullet of a shot from 30 metres after poor clearance from midfielder Mabula Mudeyi.

Rayon Sport would have won the game even before stoppage time but wasted chances through Peter Kagabo, Theoneste Muhayimana, Jerome Sina and Abuba Sibomana.

On the other hand, APR also missed good scoring opportunities through Malawian pair of Victor Nyirenda and Chikuepo Msowoya as well Rwandan internationals Jean Claude Iranzi and Haruna Niyonzima.

On top of winning the MTN Peace Cup title, APR pocketed Rwf 10m while Rayon were awarded Rwf 7m and Electrogaz, who finished third without kicking a ball was given Rwf 4m courtesy of MTN Rwanda.

APR’s victory granted Primus league runners up Etincelles qualification to represent Rwanda in next year’s CAF Confederations Cup.

Etincelles return to continental action after a 22 year absence. In 1988, the Gisenyi based side featured in the African Confederation Cup after winning the President’s Cup following a 1-0 win over SC Kiyovu.

They managed to get past the preliminary round after beating Burundi’s Vital’O 1-0 on aggregates but were eliminated by DR Congo’s Karama.
