EASTERN PROVINCE

NYAGATARE — District was last Friday honored by the minister of Local government for outstanding performance in the 2007 performance contracts, after trouncing 29 districts.

Handing over the trophy, amid ululation, at Umutara Polytechnic gardens, Protais Musoni asked the leaders and residents to maintain the lead even in this year’s performance.

Two best districts were chosen from each province and in Kigali.

Among the factors considered during evaluation were efforts towards economic revolution also described as green revolution; residents are said to have embraced the program leading to increased production.

The district also scored highly in refurbishing Rukomo trading center which gave the area a new look.

Receiving the trophy, Mayor Robert Kashemeza, said it was a pride for all residents because it was achieved through combined effort.

"This trophy was won on a national level and I would love to announce that it belongs to all residents and not leaders only, because they [residents] responded positively to our call." Kashemeza proudly said.

He noted that more efforts would be put on families in the next phase of the 2008 contracts; with emphasis on sanitation and security as cornerstone to development. He observed that there were lots of untapped potentials in villages that would be utilized.

Kashemeza told residents that it was out of dogged determination to emerge winners but they would strive to maintain their position.

Governor Theoneste Mutindashyaka, urged leaders to accord work more time as an answer to economic and social challenges.
