Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has banned his country’s national team, the ‘Super Eagles’ from competing in international competitions for the next two years following their dismal showing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

True that no one likes to see their team lose because it’s upsetting and also infuriating at the same time, but is President Goodluck really providing the solution of the team’s shortcomings with is knee-jerk reaction?

Is he proving anything by not allowing the team to compete in international competitions? Don’t think so and if he insists and goes against Fifa charter that bars political interference in football, then he’s digging a deep grave for his country’s football team.

Did the team break any rules by losing all their three group stage games? Not. Why playing in the World Cup if the President thinks they aren’t good enough?

They just weren’t up to it for this particular tournament and I guess there’s no law against losing whether against better opponent or weaker.

It is unfortunate that at this stage of the World Cup, when we should be talking about Ghana missing out making history as the first Africa country to reach semifinal line, we are discussing Nigeria’s troubles—difference is, this time, the President himself is involved.

Did he really expect the ‘Super Eagles’ to just go in the tournament and dominate? Don’t think so and if he did, then he must be from another planet, not one the rest of world live on.
