The former Secretary General of MRND, a political party largely responsible for the planning and executing the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, died yesterday.

Nzirorera, 59, passed died while on trial for Genocide at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha.
He was being tried jointly with former Interior Minister Edouard Karemera and Mathieu Ngirumpatse who is a former Director General in the Foreign Ministry and President of MRND.

The  trio are jointly charged with seven counts of Conspiracy to Commit Genocide,  Direct  and  Public  Incitement  to  Commit  Genocide, Genocide, Complicity  in  Genocide  (as  an  alternative to Genocide), Crimes against Humanity  (rape,  extermination) and serious violations of Article 3 common to the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocol II (War Crimes).

"The case of Nzirorera was before Trial Chamber III. His Defence was at the final stage of the presentation of its case, with his last witness undergoing cross-examination,” reads a statement from the tribunal.

According to the release, Nzirorera died following sudden complications of a long illness
