KARONGI- Senators have taken to task local leaders of the Western Province for underperformance and continuous anomalies in accountability reports.

"The auditor general’s report indicates that similar mistakes and irregularities are committed each year and we are wondering why. Can you tell us some of the problems you face”? Senator Chrisologue Kubwimana wondered.

He named Rutsiro and Rusizi among the districts where anomalies are common.

 Senator Henriette Umulisa added: "Every time documents are poorly prepared, blame is always thrown to the accounting officer. I think these accounting officers work under someone’s supervision and the whole system should be held accountable.”

The criticism came up at a provincial stakeholders’ meeting yesterday in Karongi district. The meeting also attracted other top officials including MPs; Landrada Umuraza and Damien Nyabyenda.

Most local leaders who talked to The New Times blamed the unimpressive rating on a host of factors revolving along individual commitment of local officials.

"The low level of capacity and commitment of workers at various levels is what leads to the inconsistencies,” Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, the Mayor of Nyamasheke District said.
