Africa hairstyles varied and they usually signified ones status depending to most tribal customs.

According to some customs the people were defined by their kind of hair styles for example the Rwandan girls where differentiated for the married women depending on the way they combed and shaved their hair.

The unmarried Rwandan women combed amasunzu (hair style) similar to the men but when the woman got married she cut off the amasunzu.

As for the Masai warriors, they tied the front hair into sections of tiny braids and the back hair was allowed to grow to waist but non-warriors and women completely shaved off their hair.

Many tribes dyed their hair with red earth and grease although some even stiffened it with animal dung. Some tribes took amore simple approach, by covering their long ponytails with a headscarf and adorning them with leaves.

The modern hairstyle trend has taken another level; there are different kinds of hair styles, out-dated hair styles are re-established. The hair styles vary from shaving, braiding and combing.

Like the ancient hair styles, some modern hair styles define ones personality. People with dreadlocks are considered to be Rastafarians yet not all of them are.

Some of the modern hair styles wrongly define ones personality unlike the ancient kind of hair styles. If a man braids his hair or retouches, he is tagged gay.
