AN expectant mother (names withheld) was violently raped by a nurse recently.

Reports from Kirehe District, Eastern Province indicate that the nurse, Raphael Nzaramba, has allegedly raped several of his patients. He is now on the run and the  police is looking for him.

A source from Musaza Health Centre says Nzaramba has gone underground after he reportedly failed to reconcile with the victim’s relatives.

Dr Christopher Munyangeli, the then head of the health centre, confirmed the development when contacted on Tuesday.

Munyangeli said it is unprofessional for a medical official to rape or defile a patient and suggested that tougher laws be put in place.

"The incident happened when I was the head of the health canter. It was something that embarrassed us because our profession is expected to display a high level of integrity,” Munyangeli The New Times

He revealed that when the patient reported the matter, the nurse at first denied the allegations but later "tried to negotiate with the family to settle it outside court.”

"This is not the first time, because the nurse had been fired from other health centres following rape related cases. We alerted police and it took up the matter,” said Munyangeli.

According to sources, Nzaramba had been fired from Nemba and Nyabitale health centres in Nyaruguru District following persistent complaints from female patients.

Munyangeli added that Nzaramba got away many times because his victims were above age of consent. He suggested that such medical officials be deregistered.
