A few short years ago, the common assumption was that anyone who’d turn to their computer for love had to be a geeky, pathetic loser who couldn’t get a date.

More recently, with the Internet changing everything from the way we shop to the way we find driving directions, cyberspace has become the hottest pick-up joint on the planet.

Cyberspace is the electronic medium of computer networks, in which online communication takes place. With the advent of the internet, finding love has never been easier.

Every now and then you hear stories of people finding their soul mates online and going on to having long, enriching, successful relationships with each other.

Most of the time, these individuals encountered one another on some random chance, in some online chat room or community. But with social networking and free online dating sites being the rage today, it has become easier for people to get to know their potential love matches.

Dating on line might have its’ disadvantages but for some people in long distance relationships, it has been the best thing since sliced bread. Technology has made it possible for these couples to communicate with each other as often as they can.

Emails and text messages are also great when trying to keep in touch with a spouse. It is how some people have managed to keep the fire burning in their relationships but with web cams in their homes some can carry out video chat sessions to spice it up a bit.

Go to cyber chat and find thousands of people who use it to interact with other people. Online hookups are really common here. And for those already hooked up, there is more that technology has to offer.

In this day and age, anybody who thinks that it is impossible to be with someone who lives abroad obviously hasn’t realized just how far technology has come. With things like Facebook, Yahoo messenger, and even email, it shouldn’t be a problem staying in touch.

In some cases couples can be miles away from each other but are almost as if they are living together. Jane Mutoni 26, works at Burger King, a fast food joint  in London but her boyfriend lives in Kigali. She says it was hard at first because she was still struggling to settle in but everything is going smoothly now.

‘Facebook might just be the best thing ever,’ she says. ‘I go to work everyday and can’t wait to go home and chat with my boyfriend. I bought myself a laptop and have access to the internet. We chat on facebook for hours and it is always the highlight of my day.’

Not everyone can afford a laptop, but internet café’s are there for that. James Kwikiriza an employee at a supermarket in Kimihurura says he tries to go to the café as often as he can. His girlfriend is studying in the US.

‘Even if it’s just for an hour, I can atleast send her an email and let her know that I am thinking about her. She does the same.’

So many people have built solid relationships from these dating and hookup sites on the web. It is very popular and more people are opening up to it and trying a hand at finding true love on the net. With things like cyberspace, you never know who you might meet. There are lots of con men on there who pretend to be what they’re not but some of them are for real.

For those already in a relationship, it doesn’t have to end the second one of you jumps on a plane. Even though you won’t see each other physically, with technology these days, you can always feel like you are.
