GAKENKE - People who were displaced by last month’s landslides that were triggered by heavy rains in Gakenke District, on Tuesday received an assortment of hygienic kits from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in partnership with PROFEMME Twese Hamwe, a local NGO.

The disaster claimed six lives in Cyoko and Minazi Sectors, and left several houses destroyed.

Speaking to the recipients, UNFPA’s Dr Gifty Adriko, expressed her sympathy to the affected residents.
"UNFPA is committed to promoting reproductive health and rights of all people in Rwanda, and that includes refugees, internally displaced and people affected by natural disasters,” she said. 

According to the district vice mayor, Hyacithe Twishime, the affected families have since received support from various donors.

Meanwhile, residents in Coko Sector gathered for community work to lay the foundation for 15 houses in Nyanza cell, a new settlement designated for the displaced residents.

Twishime said community members had agreed to work together to address the plight of their homeless colleagues.
