Gacaca National Coordinator Domitille Mukantaganzwa has disclosed that Rubavu may be one of the leading districts to complete the Gacaca proceedings.

She said that Gacaca proceedings in Rubavu district are likely to end by October this year.

The revelation was made by Mukantaganzwa after the Gacaca evaluation meeting with district authorities from all levels, and Gacaca judges from all courts around the district.

The meeting addressed Gacaca achievements and identified hindrances thus setting strategies that will make it possible to successfully meet the deadline of ending all Gacaca proceedings countrywide by October this year.

"I am impressed with Gacaca activities in Rubavu. This gives us hope that we shall meet the deadline of ending all the proceedings countrywide,” said Mukantaganzwa.

Currently Rubavu has the least number of cases, remaining with 12,000, which is likely to make it easy for the district to beat the deadline.

Mukantaganzwa also said that although most of the districts had few cases remaining; there were other districts that still had much work to accomplish, citing Kamonyi, Nyanza and Bugesera districts.

She further said that although it was important to beat the deadline, there was need to be accurate because accuracy would indicate the value of work.

During the evaluation meeting, local leaders were also reminded that Gacaca was one of their responsibilities and called upon to work hand in hand with Gacaca judges for the success of the proceedings.

Rubavu sector coordinator Patrick Gahunde revealed that although they had tried their best to meet the targeted deadline of October 2007, there were still many hindrances and problems in the proceedings which included compensating survivors.
