Last month, the Ministry of Trade and Commerce in collaboration with Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS) impounded 28 trucks of imported fuel from Tanzania and sent back due to product adulteration.

According to official information from the ministry, the association of importers and distributors of petroleum products in Rwanda (ASIMPER) said the fuel was suspected to be contaminated.  

"To that effect a meeting was arranged for all stakeholders in the public and private sectors to discuss the possible causes, available test results and the way forward in addressing the issue,” said Monique Nsanzabaganwa the Minister of Trade and Industry.

The minister also said that RBS had been requested to do the analysis with the preliminary tests to confirm the suspicions.

The trucks in question which used the central corridor as the entry into Rwanda were found to have mixed kerosene and diesel a concoction that compromises the quality of the product and an act that is not allowed by the laws of Rwanda.

However, a meeting that was convened on May 21 by the stakeholders recommended that there is need to extend sampling and subsequent tests to the unleaded gasoline (PMS) and Gasoil (diesel) by RBS through other laboratories in the region for further tests.
