RUSIZI — The National Jurisdiction of Gacaca courts, has donated over 1,500 bicycles to gacaca judges in Nyamasheke and Rusizi districts to facilitate Gacaca activities.

Each gacaca court is set to get at least one bicycle.
"We have donated over 1,500 bicycles to our gacaca courts in Rusizi and Nyamasheke districts and this is aimed at improving their day to day gacaca activities as we wind down,” Alain Mutware, the Gacaca coordinator of the two districts said.

He also said that another consignment of bicycles would be received for the courts that would miss out on the first batch.

Some of the judges who talked to The New Times expressed gratitude saying the facilities would solve their transport problems. While others said the bicycles were few compared to their number.

"We thank the National Gacaca Jurisdiction and the government in general for having provided us with new bicycles; because this is going to improve our gacaca activities as we are nearly closing,” said Jean Hategeka, the president of Nkanka gacaca court.

"Though they have done a good thing of donating bicycles to us, one bicycle is not enough for a whole gacaca jury of nine; if possible they should give us more others because one bicycle would be useless,” another judge who asked not to be named said.
