EIGHT passengers travelling in a mini-bus narrowly survived death mid-week when the car they were travelling in caught fire.

The car registration number RAB 731F belonging to Stella Express Transport Company was heading to Rwamagana, Eastern Province from Kigali before it caught fire shortly after Sopetrade towards Kimichanga suburb.

The Acting Traffic Police boss, Supt Paul Gasambira, confirmed to The Sunday Times that all the passengers were rescued with no serious injuries."They only sustained minor injuries,” Gasambira said in a telephone interview.

According to the eye witness, the fire was put out by the police stand-by Fire Brigade but residents also contributed to the rescue before police arrived at the scene.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire could not be established by press time as the driver, Paulin Shyaka, said the car did not have mechanical problems.

"It is less than two weeks since we came from a vehicle inspection, I don’t think the fire was caused by mechanical failure,” Shyaka said.

"I just saw smoke coming out from the engine before the vehicle caught fire.” the driver explained.
