AS Kigali made it two league titles in as many seasons as they retained the national women league title with a 4-2 win over Remera Rukoma (GSSR) yesterday at Nyamirambo Regional stadium.

The Kigali City Council side knew one more win would see them crowned champions but GSSR pounced on an uncharacteristically rocky start by the defending champions to take an early lead when AS Kigali keeper Judith Ingabire failed to keep out Jolie Uwimana’s volley on the 21st minute.

AS Kigali nerves settled on the 42nd minute when Mefya Hakizimana equalised to leave the sides level at half time.
Like the first half, GSSR kept the champions under pressure and the move paid off when Uwimana scored her second goal of the day.

But AS Kigali were far from done. On the 70th minute, the side’s influential play maker Saida Ntagisimana, who had hit the wood work three times, sent the crowd into frenzy with a well taken free kick.

Shadia Uwamahirwe scored the third before Hakizimana completed the rout on the 88th minute to take her season tally to 32 goals.

After the game, an elated Grace Nyinawumuntu heaped praised on her team for retaining the title.

"They have been fantastic throughout the season and deserved to win the title. They have not only been winning but they have been doing it with style,” she said.

The Inaugural national women league was claimed by APR in 2008 while AS Kigali won last year’s title. Till this day, Rwanda is the only East African country with a competitive women football league.
