The Ministry of Local Government will reward the best Umuganda accomplishments from every province come June 26.

According to the official in charge of the community work in the ministry, Nadine Umutoni, the selection exercise began last month and was supposed to end yesterday.

Umuganda is a nationwide community work programme.
It is meant to forge unity, reconciliation among Rwandans, and reduce government expenditure on public services.

The aim of the awards is to show the population the importance of the monthly community work through parading successful acts of Umuganda.
This, according to the officials, will help people see their monthly toils pay off.

In an interview with The New Times yesterday, Umotoni said that the exercise is also one way of putting more emphasis in performance contracts implementations.

"The selection was done on the district level in the four provinces and Kigali city. The districts have now forwarded the proposed works to the province where the best will be selected,” said Umutoni.

According to officials in the ministry, most of the works presented for the competition include; Roads, Bridges, schools, hospitals and Houses for the needy, all of which were the results of the monthly community work.

Umutoni says that the best Umuganda achievements in every province will be rewarded with a certificate and Rwf 1.8 million.
