MUHANGA – Over 100 staff of Rwanda Utilities and Regulatory Agency (RURA) last Friday donated Rwf5million towards the extension of electricity to genocide orphans in Kagitarama village, Muhanga district. 

The donation was handed over by Emmanuel Butera, the Director of transport who represented the Director General, Diogène Mudenge.  

The installation of power lines, which is expected to benefit over 110 orphans living in 34 families,is part of the RURA’s outreach programmes. 

RURA staff also handed over mattresses among other items that would improve on the general welfare of the orphans. The group also visited the homes of the of the orphans and shared happy moments with them. 

"The support is part of RURA’s programmes that enable genocide orphans to have a sustainable livelihood,” Butera said. "With electricity, the orphans can come up with micro- projects, study under lights and have security.”  

The Vice Mayor of Muhanga district, Alice Uwimbabazi, hailed RURA for its exemplary charity activities that she said addresses problems of the post genocide era. 
Genocide survivors welcomed the assistance and presented a certificate of appreciation to RURA.

Jean Bosco Nsabyimana, the head of orphans said that the power supply will enable them to implement some of their income generating projects and improve their livelihood.
