KIGALI - A plan is underway to tarmac an additional 103.8 kilometres of the city road network, officials have confirmed. They revealed that the activities will cost an estimated Rwf31 billion.
According to Bruno Rangira, Kigali City Council’s Spokesperson, the project will be implemented in several phases and will last for three years.
"The project will start in July and we already have funds totalling Rwf 10 billion – from the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Road Maintenance Fund, but we are still soliciting for more funds,” Rangira said on phone.
According to the plan, Kicukiro District will have a total 36.4 kms of new roads while Gasabo and Nyarugenge districts will have 37.7 and 29.7 kms respectively.
Not all preliminary feasibility studies are complete but in Kicukiro alone, studies on three separate sections totalling to 5.2 kms have been completed.
These are the Sonatube-Cotraco, Ziniya-Bralirwa, Magerwa-Gatenga (Isangano) roads. Those yet to be studied include 2.5 kms of the Nyanza-Rebero section and 3.5 kms in the Camp Kanombe-Busanza segment.
In Nyarugenge, studies have been carried out for the 2.5 km Rwampara-Gikondo CGM-Mironko section and a 3.2 km Nyamirambo-Akumunigo section.
In Gasabo district, 21.5 km sections have been studied including 5.6 kms in the Rwahama-Umushumbamwiza and interconnecting routes within the Bibabare neighbourhood. Others are 4.7 kms of the Gishushu-UNILAK-Shell fuel station track and 2.8 kms of the Nyarutama-Kibagabaga section.
Apart from the latest plans, there are ongoing city road works in which a total of 36 kms roads in the city will be rehabilitated with funds from government availed through a Chinese bank (Exim) loan of 30.7 million dollars.
The current project, which started in November 2009 and is scheduled to end in October 2011, has seen Kanombe, Nyamirambo, Yamaha-Kinamba, Kimihurura roads, and others being re-done.
