KARONGI – Students of the Kigali Health Institute, Karongi district campus, have been joined by administrative leaders and local residents in digging trenches as a way of fighting soil erosion.

Hilly and mountainous gardens were especially targeted by the students who were led by their leaders and local district officials, last week.

Most of the students who spoke to The New Times said digging terraces and trenches was a sure way of curbing soil erosion and therefore their contribution wasn’t in vain.
"Participating in an effort which will help to check soil erosion for a relatively long period of time gives such a good feeling,” Jenina Cyuzuzo, a first year student at the institute said.

She commended the local leaders whose presence, she said, was a motivation for more to be achieved.

Sébastien Hakizimana, the Karongi district vice mayor in charge of Economic Affairs hailed the students and called on the local community to appreciate the initiative by emulating them.
