Facebook and Politics

• In February 2010, Sheikh Abd Al-Hamid Al-Atrash, former head of the fatwa council at the influential Al-Azhar Institution, called for the ban of Facebook in Egypt saying that it promotes moral corruption.  He called the site a destructive tool that helps form “forbidden relations.”

• In February 2010, Sheikh Abd Al-Hamid Al-Atrash, former head of the fatwa council at the influential Al-Azhar Institution, called for the ban of Facebook in Egypt saying that it promotes moral corruption.  He called the site a destructive tool that helps form "forbidden relations.”

• Last year in February, the Iranian government suspended access to Facebook in the lead-up to May’s election after noticing that the opposition had more facebook support.

• In May 2007the Ontario government in USA banned bureaucrats, political staffers from accessing Facebook from government computers, citing that it was wastage of tax payers’ money.

• In 2008, Facebook teamed up with ABC and Saint Anselm College to allow users to give live feedback about the Republican and Democratic debates. Over 1,000,000 people installed the Facebook application 'US politics' in order to take part.
