Residents appeal to Gov. Kabaija for water

NYAGATARE - The Governor of Eastern Province, Dr. Ephraim Kabaija has promised residents of Rutunga cell, Rwimiyaga sector in Nyagatare district that the provincial authorities  will work with the district leaders to address what he termed ‘serious’ water shortage in the area. 

Rwimiyaga residents say that they have been depending on water from Akagera River, which has proved to be dangerous. Four children have been killed by crocodiles and four others seriously injured in the last two years while fetching water from Akagera River.

‘We are very worried about this water shortage issue. Our children are dying while fetching water from River Akagera. We need your immediate attention,’ one of the residents made told the governor. 

Speaking at a meeting that brought together local leaders of Nyagatare district, Dr. Kabaija asked district officials to make a formal application for assistance to Rwanda Water Supply Company (RWASCO) in the district, requesting for immediate supply of water in the area. 

‘I suggest that you first make a formal application. By so doing , the provincial authorities  will urgently help you to mobilize funds that will be needed for the water project,’ he said.
