In-form Sunrise FC on Wednesday, December 21, defeated league leaders AS Kigali 2-1 at the Nyagatare Stadium, a surprise result that could cost them chances of finishing the first round of the Rwanda Premier League at the top of the table.

The home side dominated proceedings from the start of the game but could not have a cutting edge upfront as the AS Kigali defense led Jean Paul Ahoyikuye remained resolute.

The visitors had a slow start in the first half and could not take risk to attack a Sunrise side whose striking force led by Samson Babuwa and Yafesi Mubiru made them sweat into their shells.

The first half of the game ended goalless though Sunrise FC were by far the better side.

The hosts started the second half taking control of the game again and their hard work was rewarded in the 59th minute when Nigerian striker Samson Babuwa sent the "Golgotha" supporters in wild celebration with a fabulous finish from Yafesi Mubiru’s cross.

The host didn’t give Casa Mungo’s men time to regroup as they took advantage of their shaky defense to extend their lead after 70 minutes of the game through in form striker Yafesi Mubiru who scored his 10th league goal of the season.

Substitute Jacques Tuyisenge pulled one back for AS Kigali in the 88th minute as Sunrise FC held on to defend their lead till the end of the game.

Sunrise FC are now on a five-game unbeaten run and striker Samson Babuwa was elated with his goal and their output against the league leaders.

"It was a great game, personally I knew we were going to take the three maximum points. I am happy with my goal as well," Babuwa told Times Sport.

"The AS Kigali coach (Casa Mbungo) was my former coach so I know him very well, I know how he wants his backline to be and that was one of the things that I capitalized on," the Nigeria international added.
