MUHANGA – Four residents of Cyeza sector, Muhanga district have been arrested on accusations of perpetuating genocide ideology, including harassing and humiliating genocide survivors, Police have confirmed.

The suspects, who were arrested last week, are said to have committed the crimes in Kagege village.

Police say they have got enough evidence and would soon produce the suspects in court to be formally charged.

The Cyeza sector leader, Sixte Mugwarakarama, stated that the suspects have been involved in such acts for ‘a couple of years’, forcing survivors to shift from the area during genocide commemorations.

However, he said, "Such activities have been minimised and two local leaders who were also implicated (in charge of security and information) have been relieved of their duties,” Mugwarakarama said.

The suspects face between 10 to 20 jail terms if found guilty.

A recent report by the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA), revealed that survivors living in Muhanga district are the most harassed, followed by Huye district, all in the Southern Province.
