A report by the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA) has revealed that survivors living in Muhanga District are the most harassed, followed by Huye district, all in the Southern Province.

According to the report, 528 cases related to harassment of survivors of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi were reported. The cases cited included, murder, divisionism, Genocide ideology and revisionism. 

However, speaking to The New Times, the NPPA spokesman, Augustin Nkusi, said that the cases have reduced compared to previous years. 

"Generally, these crimes have reduced compared to previous years, and people have started understanding how the justice system works,” Nkusi said.

"We have given such cases priority and we regularly try these cases at the scene of the crime so the public understand their gravity”

Nkusi added that the prosecution has also formed a Witness and Victims Protection Unit responsible for receiving and acting on such crimes.

The unit can also relocate harassed survivors or witnesses if their security is threatened.
