HUYE – At least remains of 123 genocide victims were last Sunday given a decent reburial at Ruhashya memorial site, Huye district.  

Speaking during the burial ceremony, Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, the Executive Secretary of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission (NURC), told a crowd of mourners that commemorating the genocide is a way of forging unity and reconciliation.

"During commemorations, we evaluate the way we have gone in terms of unity and reconciliation. Genocide survivors and perpetrators should join their hands together during such periods,” Habyarimana said.  

Genocide survivors were urged to remain strong and work hard so as to over come their challenges.  

The deputy Speaker of Parliament, Polisi Denis, asked local residents to work together to build the country, and urged survivors to work toward a bright future. 

"It is difficult to forgive after the suffering you endured, but that is what we need in order to live a better life,” he said. 

More than 40,000 remains of genocide victims have so far been laid to rest at Ruhashya genocide memorial site.

Meanwhile, the survivors appealed to authorities to rehabilitate the area memorial site which they said is in a sorry state.
