Mount Kigali University (MKU) has reaffirmed its commitment to institutional excellence, effective governance, and strategic leadership through participation in a high-level international conference focused on strengthening council-management relations in African universities.

The three-day executive conference was held at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom (UK) from June 22–24, 2026, under the theme "Management-Council Relationships in Universities: Strategic and Practical Considerations for Executive Leadership and Governance in African Universities.”

It brought together university council chairpersons, vice-chancellors, senior management teams, and higher education governance experts from Africa and the United Kingdom to explore how stronger partnerships between governing councils and university management can drive institutional performance, sustainability, and academic excellence.

The conference was jointly organised by Global Skills Hub (UK) and Lancaster University. It was designed to strengthen council and senior leadership effectiveness, deepen understanding of governance best practices, facilitate knowledge exchange, and equip university leaders with practical tools for sustainability, risk oversight, and resource mobilization.

Representing Mount Kigali University were Dr. Innocent Mugisha, Chairman of the University Council, Dr. Martin Kimemia, Vice-Chancellor, and Mr. Thomas Nganga, Member of the University Council, who joined counterparts from Mount Kenya University and other leading institutions in discussing the future of higher education governance.

A key focus of the conference was the relationship between governing councils and university management teams, which experts identified as one of the most critical determinants of institutional success. Participants examined the distinct but complementary roles of councils and management in achieving university goals.

Discussions emphasised that while governing councils provide strategic direction, policy oversight, and accountability, management teams are responsible for implementation, operational excellence, and delivering institutional results.

The conference highlighted that institutions thrive when councils and management operate as partners united by a shared vision, mutual trust, transparency, and a commitment to long-term institutional growth.

For Mount Kigali University, these discussions align closely with the university’s vision of becoming a leading centre of academic excellence, innovation, and transformational education in Rwanda and the wider region.

The conference programme explored how effective governance directly influences institutional performance.

Sessions focused on building high-performing governing councils and leadership teams, defining authority and accountability boundaries between councils and management, and developing governance systems that support strategic decision-making and institutional resilience.

Speakers from Lancaster University and leading African universities emphasized that strong governance structures are essential for maintaining academic quality, safeguarding institutional values, promoting innovation, and ensuring sustainable growth.

For Mount Kigali University, these lessons are particularly important as the institution continues to strengthen its academic programmes, expand research initiatives, and invest in emerging technologies that enhance student learning and graduate employability.

The second day of the conference focused on ethical leadership, accountability, international engagement, and global positioning. Participants examined how universities can strengthen institutional reputation through good governance, strategic partnerships, and international collaboration.

Discussions also explored how university councils can support internationalisation strategies, strengthen stakeholder confidence, and position institutions to compete effectively in a rapidly evolving global higher education landscape.

These conversations are highly relevant to Mount Kigali University's ongoing efforts to enhance international partnerships, strengthen quality assurance systems, and elevate its profile as a globally connected institution committed to delivering world-class education.

The final day focused on financing the African university of the future, with sessions dedicated to research funding, commercialization of innovation, grantsmanship, resource mobilization, and financial sustainability.

Participants explored strategies for diversifying university revenue streams, strengthening industry partnerships, increasing research funding opportunities, and creating sustainable models that reduce overreliance on tuition income.

The discussions provide Mount Kigali University with valuable insights into building a resilient and sustainable institution capable of supporting long-term growth, innovation and academic excellence.

The conference outcomes align strongly with Rwanda’s Vision 2050, which identifies quality education, innovation, leadership development, and human capital transformation as key drivers of national development.

As Rwanda continues its transition toward a knowledge-based economy, universities have a critical responsibility to produce graduates equipped with the leadership, innovation, and problem-solving skills needed to contribute meaningfully to national and global development.

The knowledge and experiences gained from Lancaster University will support Mount Kigali University's ongoing efforts to strengthen governance, enhance institutional effectiveness, improve decision-making processes, and foster a culture of excellence throughout the university.

For Mount Kigali University, participation in the conference reflects a broader commitment to continuous improvement, global benchmarking, and transformational leadership.

The engagement reinforced the understanding that strong council-management relations are fundamental to achieving institutional goals, maintaining accountability, driving innovation, and delivering high-quality education.

As the university continues to embrace emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, educational robotics, and Virtual Reality-enhanced learning, effective governance and strategic leadership will remain essential pillars in supporting academic excellence and institutional growth.

Through strong partnerships between the University Council and Management, Mount Kigali University is strengthening its capacity to deliver quality education, foster innovation, and position itself as a premier institution contributing to Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the future of higher education in Africa.
